Westmorland Bible Reading plan

“Man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”  Matthew 4:4

Where do you start with the Bible?  It’s a big book and we can easily get lost in its thickets.  This plan, written originally for the congregations in Burton and Holme, divides the whole Bible into 4 sections:

OT 1               Old Testament 1: Genesis to Kings

OT 2               Old Testament 2: Chronicles to Malachi

OT Poetry      Psalms and the four other ‘poetic’ Old Testament books

NT                  New Testament

Choose which section(s) you’ll read this year and then do something different next year.

For example, you could read:

  • The New Testament only (1 chapter/day)

  • Old Testament 1 (1-2 chapters/day)

  • OT 2 (1-2 chapters/day) and

  • OT Poetry (1 chapter/day)

Every Bible chapter is included so after four years (or sooner) you will have read every word in the Bible.  Read Monday – Friday.  Saturday is a catch-up day with a suggested ‘extra’ reading.  No readings on Sunday; hear God’s Word read in the congregation.  Readings are ordered to bring out some links and chronology, e.g. readings in Acts are paused to take in the letters Paul wrote from particular cities.

The plan starts with the new church year on Advent Sunday (Week 1).  If you start at another time, or if you get behind, just find today’s readings and start there.  You’ll come back to chapters you missed another year.  You can read alone or read with your family or a friend.  It will work with any Bible translation, it’s a simple A5 leaflet (large-print A4 also available) and it’s free of charge.

You can view, download or print a copy of the bible reading plan in either A4 large print or A5 leaflet size by clicking on the buttons below, or pick them up from our churches, or contact us and we’ll send you a copy.
